How can we reduce disposable food packaging materials in NYC?

As we continued to prototype and brainstorm ideas for synthesis, a few themes kept arising that we must take into account. We have continuously found that convenience trumps all so no matter the process we put in place, the convenience of grabbing food and running out the door mustn’t be changed. Making the process less harmful to the earth by creating less garbage is the end goal.
To do so, we think that an incentive pipeline must be created to incentivize better behaviors at every step of the process from suppliers, consumers and end waste collectors.
Also, based on our interviews, we think that the solution should satisfy as many of these criteria as possible.
- Faster (or at least not slower) than the current process
- Produces less non-recyclable municipal waste
- Utilitarian and Functional
- Easy to carry and transportable
- Replicable and repeatable
- Conducive to social experience
- Creates supplier benefits
- Internalizes externality cost
